General Skilled Migration (GSM) is part of the Points Based Skilled Migration scheme. Applicants are not able to apply directly for a GSM visa but instead have to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and wait to be invited by the Department of Home Affairs.
To apply for a visa:
You need to meet minimum requirements when lodging an EOI:
- You must not be more than 45 years old
- You must have an occupation listed on either MLTSSL (subclass 189) or STSOL (subclass 190)
- You must have competent English
- You must have positive skills assessment
Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189)
To be able to apply for this visa you need to submit an expression of interest and then be invited through SkillSelect to apply. You can apply from inside or outside of Australia.
You need to meet minimum requirements when applying for the Skilled-Independent visa (subclass 189)
- You must not be more than 45 years old
- You must have an occupation listed on MLTSSL
- You must have competent English
- You achieved the score specified in your letter of invitation
- You must have a positive skills assessment
When granted this visa lets you:
- stay in Australia indefinitely
- work and study in Australia
- be eligible for public healthcare and public education
- apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible)
Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
This visa is for those who want to live and work in Australia after being nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency.
To be able to apply for this visa you need to submit an expression of interest and then be invited through SkillSelect to apply. You can apply from inside or outside of Australia.
You need to meet minimum requirements when applying for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
- You must not be more than 45 years old
- You must have an occupation listed on STSOL
- You must have competent English
- You achieved the score specified in your letter of invitation
- You must have a positive skills assessment
- You have been nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency
When granted this visa lets you:
- stay in Australia indefinitely
- work and study in Australia
- be eligible for public healthcare and public education
- apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible)
